Colesberg’s Bordeaux restaurant would like to welcome you to an authentic Karoo lifestyle and gastronomic experience. Colesberg is a thriving northern cape country town nestling in a quiet hollow just off the n1, about 30km south of the great orange river.
The town mixes a vibrant atmosphere during business hours with atypically quiet and restful ambience at other times. There is an extensive variety of interesting and historically sites to be found locally along with many well maintained houses and buildings typical of Karoo architecture.
The present Bordeaux Restaurant now occupies the spacious and original building that was once the home of the Badenhorst family who erected the house named “Bordeaux” in 1830, on one of the first 10 stands allocated in the area. (today you will find us in Colesberg’s main church st. with plenty of parking space nearby). The modern Bordeaux restaurant retains all the charm of the original house, being both warmly attractive and spacious inside along with an extensive garden (the site of the original coach house and stables).
A 100 year old vine still bears fruit and covers part of the garden. Guests can enjoy a delightfully rustic setting that feels totally remote from the noise and bustle outside. Historically, the house belonged to the Badenhorst family who were then (and still are) sheep farmers on the local farm “Raastfontein”. Currently 8th generation Raastfontein farmer Pieter Badenhorst hand picks all the lamb served at the Bordeaux. In an interesting historical note, one of the first Badenhorsts, “ouma grietjie” made herself famous by alone opposing the local British commander, one sir John French, by rushing horse whip in hand, to the magistrate when sir John tried to commandeer her horses. She had invited sir John to view the spectacle of her white serving girl and her black gardener pulling her “tra” in place of her horses.
Needless to say sir John returned the horses. According to your needs, the Bordeaux is both a relaxing coffee house offering a delicious variety of light snacks and meals and a gourmet restaurant offering a unique Karoo menu. We aim to cater for the whole family so the children can amuse themselves in the play area while their parents can enjoy a drink or snack / meal on the shaded terrace.
